“You’re unlikely to play this record at your next soirée but the breadth and ambition is to be applauded,” stated NME’s review of Lulu, the 2011 collaboration between thrash legends Metallica and former Velvet Underground frontman Lou Reed. Metallica have performed way beyond what many thought them capable; they improvise freely as Reed’s musical bitch, while for him this marks his most outré offering since Metal Machine Music.”
The album received a mostly negative response from fans and critics alike, who felt that Reed’s monotone vocals did not mix well with Metallica‘s heavy guitars. “Why is this surprising?” asked prior to the release of the album in response to comments on whether or not the contrasting styles of both artists would work together. “An odd collaboration would be Metallica and Cher. That would be odd. Us – that’s an obvious collaboration.”
Reed is now set to take his new material on the road with a series of European dates which he has dubbed From VU to Lulu, in which he will also perform his earlier classics alongside new songs, albeit without the assistance of Metallica.
