In 1990 funk metallers Extreme were launched into the mainstream with the release of their second album Pornograffitti, which brought the band to mass attention with their hit singles Decadence Dance and Get the Funk Out. Yet it would be their number one smash More Than Words, which replaced the tired power ballad with a more restrained sound, prompting other groups like Mr. Big to follow suit.
While not as epic as their follow-up, III Sides to Every Story, Pornograffitti showed a more mature and complex sound than its eponymous predecessor and saw Extreme flirting with styles ranging from rap to crooning. Guitarist Nuno Bettencourt, one of the most underrated in the genre, took the spotlight with his instrumental solo Flight of the Wounded Bumble Bee, which managed to eclipse his impressive work on their earlier classic Play With Me (now most famous for its inclusion in Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure).
While some aspects of Pornograffitti now seem dated, it was still an ambitious album that diverted away from the generic hair metal sound that populated the scene during that time. Extreme have announced that they will be playing three dates in Japan in April in which they will perform the album in its entirety, although no word as yet whether or not America or Europe will get a similar treatment. The dates are as follows:
April 2012:
- 16th. Tokyo Dome City Hall – Tokyo, Japan
- 17th. Tokyo Dome City Hall – Tokyo, Japan
- 18th. Namba Hatch – Osaka, Japan
