Is is hard to believe that Christian rock legends Stryper have ever done anything immoral, excessive or unacceptable. While other hair metal bands of the 1980s indulged in narcotics, groupies and all manner of debauchery, they were spreading the word of God to their devoted followers.
In a new interview with Houston Press, frontman Michael Sweet – who gives regular updates and positive messages to his fans via Twitter – revealed how the band turned to God early on and have never looked back; “Prior to Stryper we had our days, and we would be dishonest to say otherwise. We were 13 and 16, playing backyard parties and doing everything that came with it. We rededicated our lives to Christ – I did at 20 – and we devoted 100 percent of what we do to God and the rest is history, until we take our last breath.”
He continues; “We grew up going to KISS and Van Halen shows. We didn’t grow up in the church or get molded in the church like most other Christian bands. We came up in the rock scene and that is why we were a bit different in terms of delivery and approach and how we sound. We were called to go out in the world and into the bars, where other Christian bands aren’t comfortable going.”
