Smashing Pumpkins were one of the most underrated rock bands of the 1990s and were sadly eclipsed by the success of the Seattle grunge scene. Yet their albums Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness are considered by many to be modern classics and helped launch the group into the mainstream. Yet following the disappointing performance of their final album before their initial break-up, 2000′s Machina/The Machines of God, the band turned their back on the industry by self-releasing Machina II/The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music on the internet and then calling it a day. Despite eventually reforming in 2006, their earlier work is still considered their strongest and features their most well-known songs.

Frontman and sole original member Billy Corgan has announced that the group now plan to re-release their material with remastered sound and previously unavailable bonus tracks; “We’ve finally, after about nine-ten years of negotiating, have finally secured the rights to all the unreleased material in the Pumpkins archives. Both stuff that we possess and stuff that EMI, our old record label, has. And as part of that we’re going to re-issue all the old, so by Christmas this year Gish, Siamese Dream and Pisces Iscariot will all come out reissued, remastered with some extra tracks, unreleased things. And then in 2012 you’ll see Mellon Collie, Aeroplane Flies High and Adore. And also all this stuff will also be on vinyl, will be really high-grade vinyl. Our reissues. And then in 2013 we will have Machina I and Machina II put together, finally in the correct running order. Might even possibly remix all that stuff, because I know through the years not everyone has liked those mixes.”

Corgan also revealed that the Smashing Pumpkins will be returning to the studio over the coming months to record their first full-length album since 2007′s Zeitgeist, following the track-at-a-time release of Teargarden by Kaleidyscope; “We’ve got one more song that’s going to come out, I think in about a week – hopefully end of April, beginning of May – the song Owata is going to be our tenth Teargarden release. We’re excited about that, we’re really happy with that. After that we’re going to take a break and we’re going to do something a little different. We’re actually going to go in the studio and record a full album, old school-style. Even though I pronounce the album dead I still want to do another one… So we’re going to call it Oceania… So we’re calling it the album within the album, it is part of the Teargarden project. And we figure it will be about nine-ten-eleven songs. Most of are already written and we’re just finishing them up now. We’re going to go in the studio May-June-July and hopefully it will be out September 1st. That’s the general plan.”
