Although few could argue that their heyday are long behind them, what many consider the classic era of Guns N’ Roses remains an iconic moment in rock history and even now, twenty years later, fans are eager to see the principal members reunite for a tour or even a new album. Drummer Steven Adler had been the first to leave the band, following a well-publicised battle with addiction, while rhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin followed soon afterwards. With lead guitarist Slash and bassist Duff McKagan departing during the mid-1990s, frontman Axl Rose remained the sole original member. Over the years there has been debate as to why each member decided to leave, as well as the tension between each of the musicians that had been further fuelled in the press. “It was really a fight with me and Slash,” Rose recently the Los Angeles Times. “Izzy was doing the same thing, but the fight with me and Slash started the day I met him. He came in, popped my tape out and put his in and wanted me in his band. And I didn’t want to join his band. We’ve had that war since Day 1.”

In a new interview with Esquire Slash talsk briefly about what how he feels when he looks back on his early days with Guns N’ Roses and his feud with Rose; “When I see footage of Guns N’ Roses, I see that fucking hunger and attitude. You could not fuck with those five guys. It was just raw. It was this lean, hungry thing on its way up. It was as sincere as any rock ‘n’ roll that I’ve ever heard, and I’m proud of that… The split between Axl and I was a quiet one. But because there was so much attention on the breakup — and are we going to get back together? — it got built up into this monster that led to a kind of animosity that wasn’t the focus for me. Neither one of us wants to be down each other’s throats for no reason. At this point, I’m trying to put it to rest. So I try to avoid the subject.”
