To many she is an icon, an influential singer and artist who first emerged from the New York punk in the 1970s with her classic debut album Horses. Earlier today it was revealed that Mickey Sumner has been cast as Smith in an upcoming movie based around the legendary rock club CBGB in New York, where Smith first made a name for herself. Thirty-seven years on from her first record and Smith is set to release her eleventh studio album, Banga, later this month through Columbia Records.
In an interview with Spinner, Smith discusses the status of punk icon that she is often graced with; “I don”t even know what my status is! Status is an illusion. You can seem really big for awhile and then you can walk out the next day and nobody cares. I’ve been through that so many different times. I’ve been (thought of as) a fashion icon and then thought of as out of touch. If you live long enough, you’ll be in and out many times. If people like the work that I do, I’m really happy.”
