Overwhelmed by the surprise success of their sophomore record Nevermind and their instant thrust into the media spotlight, Nirvana opted to venture away from the commercial appeal of the album with their follow-up, teaming up with producer Steve Albini (whose work included the Pixies‘ raw debut Surfer Rosa) to create something more aggressive and unpolished. “You can almost taste the mixed emotions in Kurt Cobain’s mouth on In Utero, spat out as if the singer were trying to expel his tongue along with the lyrics,” stated Spin critic Howard Hampton at the beginning in his review.
In Utero was released on 13 September 1993, just two months after Cobain collaborated with notorious Naked Lunch author William S. Burroughs on the spoken word record The “Priest” They Called Him. To make the album’s twentieth anniversary, a deluxe edition will be released in September, although no details have yet been revealed regarding the content. The band’s label, Geffen Records, previously released a special edition of Nevermind to make its anniversary, which included a host of demos and previously unreleased recordings.
The band’s official YouTube page has posted a thirty second teaser starring comedian and actor Bobcat Goldthwait. Watch it here!
