Last week saw the twentieth anniversary since the release of Nirvana‘s industry-changing breakthrough Nevermind, which effectively put an end to the Hollywood hair metal scene and instead ushered in a new era of raw garage rock. On October 31st 1991, just a few weeks after their second album debuted, the band performed at the Paramount Theatre in their hometown of Seattle alongside fellow grunge pioneers Mudhoney and riot grrrl icons Bikini Kill.
The show opened with a rendition of Jesus Doesn’t Want Me For a Sunbeam, a song that would later re-appear in acoustic form on their acclaimed MTV Unplugged album two years later. Nirvana‘s set would include the hit single Smells Like Teen Spirit, as well as new tracks Lithium, Aneurysm and Breed. Rape Me, which would later be recorded for their third and final album, 1993′s In Utero, would also be performed.
