After half a century of touring and recording together it has been announced that The Rolling Stones intend on making their final live performance at next year’s Glastonbury festival in Somerset, England. The band first formed in London in 1962, with the original line-up being frontman Mick Jagger, guitarists Keith Richards and Brian Jones, drummer Tony Chapman, bassist Dick Taylor and pianist Ian Stewart. Chapman was soon replaced by Charlie Watts, while Stewart officially left in 1963, although he would still remain a regular contributor to the group. Jones passed away in 1969 at the age of just twenty-seven, with Mick Taylor joining soon afterwards.
After numerous personnel changes, the current line-up remains Jagger, Richards, Watts and Ronnie Wood, who came onboard in 1975 following the departure of Taylor. Their last studio album, the acclaimed A Bigger Bang, was released in 2005 and achieved Platinum sales, while the single Streets of Love was released on 7″ red vinyl. Most recently, Jagger appeared on the hit American show Saturday Night Live as a guest host, which also featured collaborations with the Foo Fighters and Jeff Beck.
The Mirror claim that the band will play their farewell show at next year’s Glastonbury festival, although it remains unclear whether they will release any new material; “Sources close to the band indicate that the appearance is expected to be the final date in a “handful” of shows in Britain and America in 2013 – which they see as their true 50th anniversary – before they finally retire from the live arena… One insider revealed: “All four members have agreed that next year is the right time to have one final hurrah and put on the gig of their lives. It’s a case of now or never, and obviously Glastonbury is the most important festival on the circuit. Everybody’s incredibly excited… it’s a final bow.””
UPDATE (Monday, June 18th, 2012): According to The Guardian, The Rolling Stones have dismissed rumours that Glastonbury 2013 will mark their final live appearance and that the band will not be performing at the event
