Taylor Hawkins, the drummer who joined the Foo Fighters during the recording of their second studio album, The Colour and the Shape, has been cast as iconic singer Iggy Pop in the upcoming motion picture set around the legendary punk venue CBGB. This will mark the official acting debut of forty-year-old Hawkins, although he has occasionally played roles in his band’s music videos, most notably as frontman Dave Grohl’s timid girlfriend in the promo for their 1997 hit Everlong, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Michel Gondry.
Hawkins joins a cast of celebrated actors that include Rupert Grint (from the Harry Potter franchise) as Dead Boys guitarist Cheetah Chrome, Malin Akerman (Rock of Ages) as Blondie singer Debbie Harry and Alan Rickman as the club’s owner, Hilly Kristal. According to The Hollywood Reporter, new additions to the project are Johnny Galecki (The Big Bang Theory) as manager Terry Ork, Mickey Sumner (The Borgias) as CGBG regular Patti Smith, Steven Schub (from season six of 24) as Ramones bassist Dee Dee Ramone, Evan Alex Cole (As the World Turns) as Richard Hell of Television and Kerry Bische (Scrubs) as amateur journalist and future filmmaker Mary Harron.
Filmmaking of CBGB is set to commence later this month in Savannah, Georgia and New York, where the club was located until its closure in 2006, with co-writer Savannah, Georgia and New York, where the club was based, with co-writer Randall Miller (Bottle Shock) behind the camera.
