After two rape attacks reportedly took place at Latitude in Suffolk a couple of weeks ago, organisers Festival Republic have spoken out regarding the negative publicity surrounding the event, the image the public now have regarding Latitude and steps for young women to take whilst attending festivals.

“I do resent the way the press have made it out as being that somehow these are suddenly unsafe places to be,” protests Melvin Benn, who expressed his concern to the BBC. “If rape took place it’s horrific. I think we work very hard on safety. All of our campsites are lit, we have lots of stewards in them, they’re all in high vis [high visibility jackets].”

Festival Republic not only handle Latitude but also the Reading and Leeds Festival and Electric Picnic in County Laois in Ireland. Benn says, “We will provide additional information, guidelines [and] support, particularly for young women under 18.”
