Blues Guitarist Michael Burke Dies at Fifty-Four

Chicago-based guitarist Michael Burke passed away on Sunday, 6th May, after collapsing in customs at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. He was taken to a nearby hospital but failed to regain consciousness.

Burke was born in 1957 in Milwaukee and came from a musical background, with both his father and grandfather having enjoyed local fame for their talents. Burke formed his first band while still in his teens and also performed with other artists in the area. His debut album, The Inside Out, was released in 1997 and he immediately gained the respect of his peers, earning the moniker Iron Man.

Burke signed with Alligator Records in 2001 and released several critically acclaimed albums through the label. Alligator owner Bruce Iglauer broke the news of Burke’s death via Facebook, “Michael was a sweet man, hugely talented and deeply soulful. I was proud to have him call me his friend.” Joe Bonamassa, acclaimed blues guitarist and member of Black Country Communion, paid his respect to Burke on Twitter; “RIP one of the best and the nicest guys around. So sad to hear this tragic news.”

I had the pleasure of doing sound for the Mike Burke band in Atlanta Ga for a private film company party. I had never heard of the band however I was blown away by his talent. He heard me play organ during his sound check and ask me to play with him on his last 2 songs. Man it was a great experience we played and played as people gathered around looking at me the sound guy playing the organ. He shared his experience on getting a record deal and how that impacted his life. I got a few calls on maybe doing some tour dates with them but my schedule would not allow me to. He will be greatly missed I found out passed from a bass player that was at my rehearsal hall who knew the drummer popcorn. Man life is short. We must go for our dreams. Mike your talent was great and gave me much more respect the the blues. His solo's were never predictable. You heard rock chops blues chops jazz chops folk chops man it was never boring.Rest on my friend you have left your mark in history.
