Black Country Communion have become something of a phenomenon over the last few months. Consisting of four talented and highly acclaimed musicians, the band had already caused a stir even before their first song was released. And when their debut album finally surfaced last week it took both the UK and US charts by storm.

Fronted by the legendary Glenn Hughes (of Deep Purple and Black Sabbath fame), BCC also features the talents of Jason Bonham (son of late Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham), Dream Theater‘s Derek Sherinian and renowned blues guitarist Joe Bonamassa.

BCC have constantly played down the ‘supergroup’ title that is commonly thrown at any band that marks a collaboration between respected artists. In today’s edition of British newspaper Telegraph, producer Kevin Shirley says: “I think that label smacks of opportunism and being put together for the wrong reasons… I think this band is real. They’re super musicians, a lot like Zeppelin in the way that they gel. But I don’t see them as a supergroup.” He continues: “The motivation in all of this really was the music… You don’t want to join something just to give yourself a credibility bump.”

Regarding how four successful musicians can work together without egos becoming an obstacle, Shirley told Love-It-Loud.com back in July: “There is always a tendency amongst good musicians to bully one another (to get their way!), and my job is to know what the end goal is – and then push everyone towards the same result. If everyone’s ideas were employed, say in designing a horse, one guy would push for a camel, and another a giraffe – my goal is to see the racehorse sprint!”
