Eccentric artist, filmmaker and pop culture icon Andy Warhol is as known for his paintings as he is for his flamboyant lifestyle. Among his most iconic works of art were his designs for The Velvet Underground‘s debut album, which featured a banana with ‘peel here and see’ written at the top, and a portrait of screen beauty Marilyn Monroe.
An art auction that recently took place in London saw Warhol’s canvas painting of Blondie singer Debbie Harry selling for £3.7m, a new record for the country’s capital. The total for the auction came to £108.8m which, the BBC report, surpassed the previous record of £95m in 2008.
