NEWS – Aerosmith Frontman Blasted for National Anthem Performance

The knives have been out against Steven Tyler ever since he took up residence on the panel of popular reality TV show American Idol. But now the sixty-three year old Aerosmith frontman has been criticised following his rendition of the US National Anthem at the AFC Championship on Sunday between the New England Patriots and Baltimore Ravens.
“It may not have been the worst version ever (although I’ll leave that up to you to decide), but we’re talking about a legendary singer who is now paid to judge other people’s singing abilities. It should have been amazing,” said the Los Angeles Times. “Instead, it was weird and screechy. Obviously, it’s a tricky song to sing, but Tyler is known for hitting crazy notes – something he never hesitates to do at every opportunity on Idol. He really only attempted one Aerosmith-esque note at the very end – and failed miserably.”
Greg Gutfeld of FOX News commented via Twitter; “I went outside to put a raccoon out of its misery – then I realized my neighbor was watching Steven Tyler sing the Star-Spangled Banner.” Reuters added; “Tyler’s rendition was off-key in places, screechy in most others and he messed up a lyric – it’s “the bombs bursting in air,” not “as bomb bursting in air.” Though he does get rock star fashion points for the festive scarf he was sporting to support his team, the AFC champion New England Patriots.”
Bleacher Report, one of the first websites to comment on the incident, said; “I was hoping that Ray Lewis would come from off-screen and annihilate the Aerosmith legend mid-song… He tries to add his trademark scream to give it some pizazz and signature feel, but it was too late. This will go down as one of those horrible celebrity renditions of the National Anthem.” Spin, meanwhile, stated; “For those of us watching in real time and not then being forced to come up with pseudo-witty instant reactions, the performance just sounded like … well, Steven Tyler singing the national anthem. Squawking is what he does!… This is a dude who in October had to go to the emergency room because he fell down in his hotel bathroom.”
